![]() ![]() The medical rationale for age-of-consent laws is clear: Children are developmentally unprepared to give informed consent, and it can be extremely difficult for them to say no to people in positions of authority, or those they trust. As a result, an adult in most European nations who has sex with someone under this age would be charged with rape, even if violent force is not used. Fixing a specific age of consent means that children and adolescents below that age cannot, regardless of circumstances, be considered consenting to sex their very age renders them incapable. Most of the age minimums range between 14 and 16 years of age. Most other countries in Europe, including Spain, Belgium, Britain, Switzerland, Denmark and Austria, have a legal age of consent. U nder French law, “rape” is defined as “any act of sexual penetration, of whatever nature, committed on the person of another by violence, coercion, threat or surprise.” Yet unlike elsewhere, there is no presumption of coercion if a sexual minor is involved. But in the meantime, it has also provoked an unprecedented backlash that has resulted in France considering a change to a longstanding, anomalous feature of its laws: Up to now, there has been no legal age of consent for sex. Indeed, the judge did ultimately order that rape charges be filed, in what Carine Durrieu-Diebolt, the attorney for the girl and her family, called a “ victory for victims.” The case has been postponed to allow for a more thorough investigation into the allegations. “It is indefensible that a girl of 11 could be considered consenting with a 28-year-old man. “With children there is inevitably coercion,” Ernestine Ronai, co-president of the gender-based violence commission at the government’s High Council for Equality between Women and Men, told me. Such a defense flies in the face of legal and cultural consensus in most Western nations, and much of the world. Recommended: The 2018 Sony World Photography Awards Sandrine Parise-Heideiger, his fellow defense lawyer, added: “We are not dealing with a sexual predator on a poor little faultless goose.” “She was 11 years and 10 months old, so nearly 12 years old,” defense lawyer Marc Goudarzian said. When the case, initially postponed, went back to court in February, the man’s attorneys did not deny the sexual encounter but argued that the girl had been capable of consenting. Under French law, a charge of rape requires “violence, coercion, threat, or surprise,” even if the victims are as young as the girl in the Montmagny case. When the case first went to court in September, the man faced only charges of “sexual infraction,” a crime punishable with a maximum of five years in jail and a €75,000 fine. ![]() The accusations were of an adult raping a child-a crime that, in France, can lead to a 20-year prison sentence for the perpetrator when the victim is 15 or younger.īut it initially wasn’t charged that way. “She thought … that she didn’t have the right to protest, that it wouldn’t make any difference,” the mother told Mediapart, a French investigative site which first reported on the allegations of the case. O n April 24, 2017, a 28-year-old-man met an 11-year-old girl in a park in Montmagny, just north of Paris, after which, he took her home where he had oral and vaginal sex with her. ![]()

However, Buckner and Garcia could not obtain the original master recordings from Sony Music Entertainment, so the duo was forced to record new performances of the songs and recreate a lot of the sound effects either digitally or musically. In 1999, a re-recorded version of the album was released independently by Buckner and Garcia, which was released commercially through K-Tel in 2002. In 1998, the duo was asked to record an unplugged version of "Pac-Man Fever" exclusively for the syndicated radio show Retro Rewind. This got the attention of CBS Records as well as other stations across the country, and the single hit #9 on the US Billboard charts in 1982. The station was bombarded with calls from listeners who begged to hear it again and again. However, when they shopped it locally, WSTR (FM) in Atlanta decided to play it for fun on their show one morning. Their manager shopped the song at radio stations nationwide, but no one wanted to play it. After that, they decided to write a novelty song about the game. It is not always possible for every player to get a score for each of the thirteen categories, so when every player has a score or a zero entered under all 13 categories (13 rounds), the game ends and all the players' scores are totaled up. If a player rolls the dice all three times, the score of the last roll is taken into consideration. Each player rolls his dice up to three times per turn, in hopes of getting one of the 13 categories. There are 13 categories such as "three of a kind", "four of a kind", "straight", very similar to the "hands" in Poker, with a few extra ones thrown in. The Yahtzee player chooses a certain combination first and then rolls the dice to try and get that combination. It's a simple game that is largely dependent on the players' luck. It is said to have been derived from a number of traditional dice games such as Puerto Rican game Genarala, and English games Cheerio and Poker Dice. Currently, at least 50 million games are sold each year.īut the roots of the game go way back in game history. It was after this milestone that the game earned millions of fans. But eventually, the Milton Bradley Company bought over the Edwin Lowe Company, along with the Yahtzee rights in the 1970s. After this over 40 million games were sold in America and around the globe. The game had to be played to be appreciated. Initially the game did not sell too well, so Lowe started throwing Yahtzee parties, believing in the power of word of mouth. Lowe then changed the name of the game to "Yahtzee". Lowe liked the game so much, that he offered to buy the rights for the game in exchange for the first thousand games produced. Lowe and asked him to make a few samples of their infamous "Yacht game", to distribute as gifts. But according to Hasbro, the current owners of the rights of the game, it was invented in 1954 by a Canadian couple who often played it with friends on their yacht.Īnd in 1956, the couple is said to have visited a toy-maker called Edwin. It is said to have been made by Milton Bradley in the 1950s. So where did it all start? The exact origin of Yahtzee is not very clear. It can be played by any number of people - in a large group or even by a single player (Solitaire). The player with the greatest grand total wins the game and therefore earns the difference between his score and that of his opponents. The object of the game is to make the maximum number of points. Like any other dice game, it involves rolling dice (five), matching them and pairing them for points. It is a game of great chance, luck and also of smart thinking and strategy. Several variations of dice games have been invented since its origin. Once a category has been assigned points, it cannot be used again for the rest of the game. Some categories are based on the total number of dice showing a certain value, while others require specific combinations, such as three of a kind or a full house.
